Abstract: The article considers a retrospective understanding of the essence of the social stratum «middle class». It is shown that modern interpretations of this concept are different due to different levels of development of states. Various approaches to determining the criteria for classifying an individual as a middle class are revealed depending on the branch of science. It is noted that the most common criteria for classifying as a middle class can be both dynamic, changing depending on the conditions of their application, and stationary, independent of conditions, but different in gradation ranges. The influence of crises, in particular the pandemic, on the state of the middle class in Russia and foreign countries is studied. The role of the middle class in the formation of a progressive structure of society is determined, the state of its development is analyzed and the prospects for the development of this social group of society are identified.
